Democrats projected to win House and take Senate in midterms, CBS News and BBC report
Wins in states with long Republican records, and in Florida districts redrawn to favor the GOP, point to a night larger than Democrats had expected, with one Senate seat still undecided.
Democrats have taken control of the Senate and are projected to win the House of Representatives in the US midterm elections, according to the BBC’s partner CBS News. The BBC described the night as extraordinary for the party.
CBS News projected the House result just after 03:00 GMT on Wednesday, which was 22:00 EST on Tuesday. The BBC reported that Democrats were making the gains they need for control but have their sights set on a much bigger victory.
The Senate results went beyond what Democrats had expected, the BBC said. North Carolina had been viewed as a likely pickup, but South Carolina was a major surprise. Pre-election polls had rated it as leaning Republican, and the state last returned a Democratic senator in 1998. Kansas, the BBC noted, had not elected a Democratic senator since 1932.
Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Maine have also turned blue, the BBC reported, citing CBS News projections. One seat, in Alaska, remains a toss-up, and CBS News said Mississippi is also now tightly contested.
Florida produced notable House results, according to CBS News projections reported by the BBC. Democrats held Florida 14 and Florida 25, a setback for the Republican effort to redraw district lines in the party’s favor. The redistricting had turned both districts from having a majority of voters who backed Kamala Harris in 2024 into ones with a majority who backed Donald Trump. Democrats also won Florida 22, which had likewise been redrawn to favor Republicans.
The Bureau of Useless Measurement notes that the Alaska seat remains uncalled and that final control of both chambers will rest on official results.
